Eight steps to a finished tech pack
- Start with the cover. Write the style name and number, the main fabric, the colorways, the size range, the quantity and the date you need it.
- Draw the flats. Front and back, flat and in proportion. Point a callout at every pocket, seam, trim and print. A photo of a garment you like helps too.
- Measure. Use the list of points of measure. Measure a garment you like lying flat, or give one size and ask the factory to grade the rest.
- List every material. Fabric and weight in GSM (grams per square meter), trims, labels and packaging. Write "Factory to source" if you want the factory to find it.
- Place the artwork. For each logo, give the method, the placement, the distance from a fixed point like the high point shoulder (HPS), the size and the colors.
- Fill in colorways and sizes. Give each part a color for each colorway. Then enter the pieces per size and color. The totals add up by themselves.
- Send it for a quote. Send the file and your artwork files to the factory, and ask for a sample.
- Check the sample. Measure the sample against your points of measure. Write every change on the Sample comments page.
Two pages from a real tech pack
We drew the Saint Parma tracksuit and made its size and color sheet before the sample. The callouts name every detail. The sheet gives the quantity for each size and color.

Five mistakes that cost a sample round
- No tolerances. Without them, nobody can say if a finished piece is right or wrong.
- Artwork without a size or a position. Give the width and height, and the distance from a fixed point.
- Colors by name only. "Navy" means different things to different mills. Add a Pantone code where you can.
- No size breakdown. The factory needs the pieces per size and color to buy fabric and plan the order.
- Changes by chat only. Put every change in the tech pack, so everyone works from one file.

What is a tech pack?
A tech pack is a set of pages that tells a factory how to make one product: sketches, measurements, materials, artwork, construction, colors, sizes, labels and packaging.
Is the template really free?
Yes. Download the Excel or the PDF file. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
Should I use the Excel file or the PDF?
Fill in the Excel file on your computer, so the size totals add up by themselves. Print the PDF if you want to fill it in by hand.
Do I need a tech pack to order from Sharknits?

What does HPS mean?
HPS means high point shoulder: the top of the shoulder, where it meets the collar. Many length measurements start there.
Can I use this template with any factory?
Yes. It follows the usual order of a tech pack, so any factory can read it.
